Symptoms of Depression

If you have been experiencing any of the symptoms listed below, then you may well be suffering from some level of depression:

  • low mood
  • feeling tired or exhausted
  • difficulty getting to sleep, or sleeping too much
  • loss of appetite
  • loss of interest in daily activities
  • feeling restless or agitated, or alternatively feeling sluggish
  • feeling worthless or guilty
  • low self-esteem or lack of confidence
  • difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • thoughts of death or suicide (with or without a specific plan)

Causes of Depression

Depression sometimes arises from particular relationship problems (e.g. after a death or a breakup) or situational difficulties (e.g. being made redundant) that human beings go through. Sometimes, it can come about because people view themselves in certain negative ways (e.g. low self-esteem or feeling that we are not accepted in some way by others).

Regulation of Emotion

People sometimes try to control their emotions strongly, or feel numb. Sometimes, the opposite is true - they struggle to contain strong feelings, and feel overwhelmed. Both can affect people’s ability to get on with their lives.

How can counselling help to deal with depression?

Counselling can give you time and space to think about what you would like to be different in your life, and how you can make this happen. Counselling is sometimes called ‘the talking cure’, because many people find it a relief just to talk and be listened to in an accepting and supportive way.

Counselling can also help people to analyse what they are going through, and gain insight into the origins of their low mood (for example, a feeling of worthlessness may have originated in a difficult childhood).

Sometimes, people experience intrusive, negative thoughts (for example, a punishing ‘internal bully’). Discussing these can help you to realise how your negative thinking can trigger bouts of low mood. Over time, you can replace these with more positive views of yourself.

We can also help you to address some of the problems you are facing. Often, solving smaller problems at first helps encourage clients to believe that they can go on to solve bigger issues.
