Why do people choose to have counselling?

Image of a crying woman - many of us suffer difficult experiences

Many of us go through difficult experiences in life. These can include periods of low mood, emotional pain, or confusion about the right way to turn.

Sometimes, these difficulties are caused by life events, such as separation, bereavement or redundancy. Sometimes, it can be past or childhood events which affect us in the present, and stop us from living life to the full.

Counselling can often be helpful in facing and overcoming these challenges.

Introducing myself ...

My name is Damien Haigh. I am a fully-qualified, BACP-accredited counsellor, with over ten years’ experience of short- and long-term therapy work.

I have a quiet therapy room in Cheapside, Wakefield (WF1) and can offer you a safe, confidential space to explore difficult feelings.

I provide quality counselling at an affordable fee, to help you to deal with your concerns, and improve your emotional wellbeing.

How can counselling help?

My aim is to create a safe, quiet, confidential space for you to discuss a pain or confusion which you might be experiencing, or a problem which you might want to address. I will listen to you attentively, supportively and patiently, and help you to explore your thoughts and feelings at a pace that feels right for you.

I respect that every human being is unique and individual, and so I tailor my approach to suit each different client’s needs. To help in this, I counsel using a ‘relational’ or ‘person-centred’ approach.

This means that I will try to understand your own felt sense of your experience as deeply as possible. Exploring things in this collaborative way can often help people to make sense of their own experience, and deal with any confusion they may be feeling. I also wish to be non-judgmental and accepting of you as a person. I will not tell you what to do, but instead help you to find the right way for you.

My training also helps me to help you to explore any childhood experiences or life events which might be limiting your potential or holding you back from living life to the full. Sometimes, negative thoughts also stop people from being happy or feeling content, and it can often be useful to work on these as well.

What professional standards do you work to?

I am a registered, accredited member (number 052900) of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I work within their Ethical Framework.
